About Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is a museum that was established in 1846 by the Royal Society of Tasmania, which makes it one of a kind outside England. The TMPG receives 400 thousand visitors annually. With its vast collection including works from around Australia as well as artworks created locally or abroad since they opened their doors back up again last year following an extensive renovation process. Led primarily through USD $2 million investment into infrastructure such as updated power supply throughout site buildings so now we have sufficient capacity to run properly.

The history of the museum is an oft-repeated story in itself. It began with efforts from 1848 when it was finally established after merging various collections that had their beginnings before this date like those belonging to The Royal Society and more recent ones such as those managed by Van Diemen’s Land Agricultural Society or Mechanics'Institutions Of Hobart - but there's not much documentation on what happened.
